Cobra Health Insurance Alternative

If you are having any health problems or conditions, if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, you need to elect Cobra and pay those premiums. A temporary cobra health insurance alternative plan will not cover pre-existing conditions.

If you are in good health and you know you will be going to another company soon that has a good health plan, you may want to consider a lower cost alternative. A temporary cobra health insurance alternative can cover you for 30 days up to 180 days and even longer.

Benefit House Insurance Services is a private health insurance agency. You must qualify by being in good health to qualify for the temporary plans we offer.

Cobra is the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985. Cobra generally requires that employers having group health insurance plans with 20 or more employees offer workers and their families the opportunity to temporarily extend their health insurance coverage in instances where they are leaving the job.

In most cases the coverage is for 18 months. You are required to pay the full cost of the insurance plus a 2% administrative fee. In cases where the employer was paying a good portion of the monthly premium, the rate you may have to pay under Cobra may be quite expensive. If you have any questions about your Cobra benefits contact your employer group health insurance plan administrator.

For further information about Cobra, check out the U.S. Department of Labor, Pension and Welfare Benefits Administration ( http://www.dol.gov/dol/topic/health-plans/cobra.htm ).
